Education

Education. As a mother, it’s almost safe to say there is nothing more important in raising a child. The education category is intended to be a resource for mothers, whether your kiddos are in preschool, kindergarten, elementary, or high school. Topics range from parent-teacher gifts to STAAR testing, and more.

Fort Worth Moms publishes original, personal stories and advice from local moms, as well as relevant and fun information for those of us in the trenches of parenthood.

Every article published via Fort Worth Moms — whether someone from our in-house team, a guest writer, or a sponsored writer — uses their words to reflect their own opinions, experiences, and beliefs. No singular article or collection of articles represents the opinions, beliefs, or agenda of Fort Worth Moms.

Learning about struggles of minorities opened up my eyes to a different world I knew nothing about. I never experienced discrimination or racism. I went through my whole life unscathed because I had assimilated so well. I knew nothing of illegal deportations, school segregation, or lynchings that Mexican-Americans endured.
We give to others to the point that we have little to offer our partner, let alone ourselves. Sometimes, the best thing to do is to pass the clipboard. It’s healthier for you as a person and as a mom to dial back occasionally to be present to all that is going on in the scheduled lives we live.
I know myself well enough to know that if no kids are at home, I won't be there either. I'm not a homebody, don't like alone time, and prefer a challenge. Being a wife and mother are the most important things to me, but they aren't the sum of who and what I am. There's plenty more, and I'm looking ahead to what that means for me as a person.
Often, atypical kids are more anxious about everyday things that many kids do not even stress about. Prepping him on where he can find the bathroom, when and where he will eat, and how to open his locker will help him feel more comfortable with such a tremendous change in school settings.
The PTA needs you. I've yet to come across someone who says, "We have too many volunteers!" If you have something to offer, give it.

Raising Race-Conscious Kids

1
If your kids are young like mine, they may have never mentioned race. They choose playmates without regard to skin color. They have no prejudices, no biases. But our kids are not colorblind. They do notice differences. So we need to give them the words to talk about race and the freedom to have the conversation with us.
Our teachers spend the entire year teaching to a test. This makes it incredibly hard for them to adjust to different learners, change their pace as needed, or be creative in their lesson plans. They are boxed in completely. Their worth as teachers -- and in turn, their school --  is measured by one test given on one day. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard in my life.
