Hurley House barsWhen you hear the word hospitality, what comes to mind? Maybe you think of gourmet meals, extravagant parties, or elaborate table settings.

When I hear the word hospitality, I think of home. A hot cup of coffee made the way I like it. A comfortable chair next to someone I love. A table prepared with a place waiting for me to sit and enjoy a delicious meal. I feel comfortable, safe, loved.

I haven’t always felt comfortable, safe, or loved. My story includes a lot of difficult chapters as it relates to my family of origin, and it doesn’t include a happy ending. I entered adulthood and marriage without a positive sense of family or home. My coping strategy as I entered the long process of healing and recovery was to invite people over for dinner. If I had enough people over for dinner, then I wasn’t really alone or rejected, right?

Cooking dinner for other people was a band-aid fix for a wound that needed intense time and focused efforts for true healing and recovery to happen. It took a lot of years for me to deal with my past, and along the way, I kept inviting people into our home. If you do something long enough, you end up getting good at it, and I became quite good at cooking. I planned menus, tested recipes, and read cookbooks cover to cover like a novel.

A powerful thing happened along the way.

I began to witness the change that can occur when we create space for others. Whether it is a family dinner or a special celebration, when we gather together around the table, our hearts—my heart—feel comfortable, safe, loved. And do you know what happens when we feel comfortable, safe, and loved?  We begin to heal and change because we are free to connect with others, express how we really feel, and be reminded that we belong.

Hurley HousseThree years ago, I started a business based on the idea of creating space for others. I named the business Hurley House because, for a significant chapter of our lives, we lived in a house on Hurley Avenue where the art of hospitably became a way of life.

Hurley House specializes in the art of creating space for others. We want to invite you in, set a place for you at our table, and equip you to do the same in your home.

Hurley House cakeHurley House offers baked goods, take-away meals, and special occasions. Walk into our new retail location (5512 Bellaire Drive South, Suite A) and find a place at our table where you can enjoy a homemade baked good and a cup of coffee. Pick up one of our take-away meals and and serve dinner to your family and friends. Order cupcakes or cookies for your next party, or let us do the work for you and host your next gathering in our new location.

We also offer hospitality classes (called Hosted) during which we teach how to successfully create space for others in your own home. Hosting others takes a lot of work, but with the right heart and a plan that works, you can make it happen!

After operating from our home kitchen for three years, we are so excited to open the doors to our new retail space on July 26, 2016.

The business grew out of a passion for gathering people around their table and in the Sasser’s home, and thus, a love of seeing the life-changing transformation that can occur in those sacred spaces. For three years, the Sassers operated the business from their home kitchen, filling special orders, opening the front door on Wednesdays for store hours, and teaching hospitality classes from the dining room table. In July 2016, Hurley House relocated to a commercial space at 5512 Bellaire Drive South, Suite A, 76109, with plenty of room to grow and a much larger kitchen!
