How many of us can honestly say that we take better care of our skin now than we did before little ones entered the picture? With so many people and activities demanding your time and energy, skincare can slip down the priority list. But it shouldn’t.

As the largest organ in your body, your skin plays an important role in your health as well as your appearance. And, with more than 3.3 million Americans being diagnosed with skin cancer each year, the consequences of inadequate skincare are real.

Preventing sun damage and slowing the progress of visible aging is usually cheaper and more effective in the long run than trying to correct damage that’s already done. The best way to ensure you’re getting quality skincare that offers the most bang for your buck? See a skincare professional: a board certified plastic surgeon, dermatologist, or licensed aesthetician working under physician supervision.

Professional skincare treatments are particularly well-suited to busy moms. Here’s why:

A qualified skincare professional will help you design a high-quality skincare routine that (1.) will get you results and (2.) you can stick with.

Shopping for skincare on your own can be confusing, time-consuming, and a gamble when it comes to finding products that actually work. Seeing a professional takes the guesswork out of skincare, helping you experience noticeable results more quickly than you might on your own.

Reputable providers will begin with a thorough skin evaluation so they can fully understand your skin quality and any issues you may have. They will also ask plenty of questions in order to understand your goals, needs, and budget, ensuring that you go home with a skincare regime that is easy to fit into your life and worth your time and money.

womanMedical grade skincare is a smart choice for moms on a budget.

This may sound counterintuitive, but it’s true. A medically-trained skincare expert can save you from making purchases based on which product has the most gorgeous spokesmodel or tempting bonus offer versus what will truly help your skin—so you can avoid wasting money on creams and serums that turn out to be nothing but bottles of empty promises. Why do these seemingly slick products rarely deliver? Even premium (and pricey!), over-the-counter skincare products contain a relatively low amount of active ingredients, often too few to make a dramatic difference.

While medical grade skincare may require a greater up-front investment, it’s designed to provide more rapid improvements in skin appearance with less product. Professional skin care products contain prescription-level doses of active ingredients and have been thoroughly tested for efficacy and safety. In fact, the most effective products are available only in a licensed physician’s office precisely because they have enough active ingredients to actually have an effect on your skin.

Seeking professional skincare help can save you lots of time.

A date with your aesthetician is a great way to renew your radiance and boost results of your skincare routine. A series of two to four facials, peels, or microneedling sessions spread over a few months may achieve greater improvements in skin texture, tone, and appearance than a few years’ worth of over-the-counter products.

On average, in-office skin rejuvenation treatments take an hour or less, and many treatments deliver an instantly noticeable boost in skin appearance. Plus, you don’t have to do anything but sit back and enjoy a little time to yourself!

For at-home skincare, having a physician or licensed aesthetician help you tailor your product line-up will give you faster results. You’ll also save time by having an expert point you to the best options instead of spending hours working your way through dozens of lotions, creams, and serums at the cosmetics counter, hoping you end up with a product that actually works.

Prioritizing your own skincare is a great way to instill healthy skincare habits in your children.

You wouldn’t dream of sending your son or daughter to summer camp without a bottle of sunscreen—you want to protect him or her from the pain of a sunburn, not to mention the impact sun damage may have on future skin health. One of the best ways to ensure your kids continue to practice healthy skincare habits is to be a good role model.

Devoting time to your own skin health will drive home the lesson that skincare is as important as brushing teeth. A skincare professional can even provide educational tips that you can pass on to your offspring.

  1. Thanks for all the tips! I can vouch for the importance of using your doctors. I struggle with skin issues and finally went to see my dermatologist about them and she helped me out tremendously! Was able to start me on some prescription lotions and guided me through all the OTC options. So glad I went!
