Best Friend Bazaar

On April 9, 2016, more than 100 FWMB readers gathered together at the Joan Katz Breast Center (JKBC) for a night filled with food, beverages, FANTASTIC giveaways, swag, and the opportunity to learn more about women’s health issues, all the while celebrating the brave and wonderful women in our lives.

At the Best Friend Bazaar, the JKBC and the lobby of the Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center Fort Worth turned into an old-world bazaar filled with 27 food, clothing, beauty, and home decor vendors — all donating at least 20 percent of profits to the JKBC. Attendees walked away with some fabulous buys! The vendors included:

More than 40 giveaway items were up for grabs too! Four times during the bazaar, FWMB doled out the prizes to several lucky winners. Those giveaway items included:

During the evening, attendees not only enjoyed swag, shopping, and giveaways, but they also benefitted from the medial expertise of Baylor Scott & White Medical Center. Guests chose two breakout sessions to attend. Their options were:

  • “Joan Katz Breast Center,” Stacey Guillen, Shanette M. Cole, MA, ACSM EP-C, ACSM/NPAS PAPHS, Manager, Medical Fitness Programs, and Cynthia Ross
  • “Heart Health” Sharon King, RN and Peggy McAtee, ACNP
  • “Sitting Is the New Tobacco,” Jan Brown
  • “Below Your Belt,” Elizabeth Weaver, NP
  • “Happy BIRTH Day,” Cathy Allen, L.C.C.E. and Kristi Wilkerson
  • “Moms on the Move,” Karisa Karsten, CES and Vennie Jones

BFB-65The main goal of the Joan Katz Breast Center is to surround its patients with hope and compassion, and to provide a sanctuary and a lifeline when receiving the news, “You have cancer.” While the center specializes in breast cancer, it also has a comprehensive GYN ONC navigation program, and services are available to anyone diagnosed with any type of cancer. A nurse navigator, whose services are free, helps the patient understand diagnosis and coordinate care. The center specializes in non-medical services including patient consultation, yoga, counseling, health, and wellness education. It connects patients and their families to a wealth of community resources. JKBC also hosts weekly multidisciplinary cancer conferences to discuss complex cancer cases.

BFB-45The Best Friend Bazaar benefited the Joan Katz Breast Center by raising funds and awareness for the organization. This was done in memory of Bethany Lytle, who was FWMB owner Emily Y’s best friend. Bethany died from breast cancer in 2015, leaving three small children and a husband behind. Through the Best Friend Bazaar, FWMB and its readers were able to donate $1,300 to JKBC.

Thank you to every reader and vendor and swag/giveaway sponsored that supported the Best Friend Bazaar. We so appreciate the opportunity to meet our readers, all while supporting a cause that is so near and dear to our hearts!
