I Am a Fort Worth Mama: Emily Kirby

Dr-Emily-J-Kirby-portrait-smDr. Emily Kirby is a board certified plastic surgeon who does it all! From as early as the sixth grade, Emily knew she wanted to become a surgeon. She graduated as the valedictorian of her high school, obtained a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University, and earned her medical degree at Texas A&M University College of Medicine, where she was accepted early. Shortly after beginning her training, Emily met her husband Randol in Austin, Texas, and together they have two boys. When Emily isn’t practicing medicine, she tries to stay outside and as active as possible. She and her family love traveling, hiking, camping, playing basketball, wake boarding, skiing, and rollerblading.

Emily graciously agreed to answer our famous five.

If we peeked in your purse right now, what would we find?

An extra scrub cap (pink camo), quick lunch bites, gum, spa gift certificate, Burt’s Bees lip shimmer, Bath & Body Works hand lotion, Anker phone charger, and a silicone breast implant (you can never be too prepared)!

Why do you call Cowtown home?

I have always felt at home in Fort Worth, even though I wasn’t born here. I first fell in love with Fort Worth when I was 16 years old, visiting my sister at TCU. The people I met here are amazing, kind, laid back, strong, and independent. People take pride in the city, which makes it a very enjoyable, comfortable place to live. It’s my kind of town!

What’s been the greatest joy of motherhood?

I have been blessed with two boys (three if you count my husband), and I couldn’t be happier! Every step of the way has been fun, challenging, and uniquely memorable. I love seeing the world unfold for them through experiences and first time discoveries. For example, playing in sand at the beach and seeing military jets fly live at the air show. We are an outdoorsy, hands‐on family and have a lot of interests and activities that we enjoy doing together.

What’s been the greatest challenge of motherhood?

It has always been a challenge being a working mom. Thankfully, my husband is understanding and marvelous, so we make it work! My toughest days are when I don’t see my kids at all, which are mercifully few and far between nowadays. I plan my schedule ahead so that I can participate in school activities and sports, and I’m proud to say that I’ve never missed a single checkup with the pediatrician! Fitting it all in to 24 hours in a day can be a challenge, but it’s so worth it.

How do you hope your life influences and/or inspires other women?

Someone once told me that you can never be 100 percent mom + 100 percent surgeon + 100 percent friend + 100 percent sister + 100 percent daughter, etc. It just doesn’t add up; something has to give. That has been the best advice for me, because I am a nothing‐less‐than‐100 percent kind of person! It is important to remind myself how to say no to things and that I am not wonder woman (even though secretly I like to think I am sometimes)! The world will still turn if I don’t volunteer tomorrow, if I sleep in for an extra 10 minutes, if I don’t whip up a three‐course meal for dinner . . . it’s all about finding the right balance that works for the whole family and being adaptable to change.

Fort Worth Favorites

Date night: Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar, a comedy club, or just the 7th Street Movie Tavern
(depending on how busy our week was!)
Dessert: Mmmm . . . anything chocolate!
Entertainment: I have always loved Six Flags – there’s nothing like the rush of a great roller coaster to put a tough day behind you! I’m learning how to be a good tee‐ball mom without getting too riled up (it’s not easy). My husband and I love goipinkbluemama logong to see Pat Green, Texas musicians, or our favorite comedians when they are in town. We try to go camping, hiking, and exploring regularly as a family. We love the Red Bull Air Races and other air shows. There’s always something on our calendar!
Shopping (clothing for you): I went to Christmas in Cowtown a few weeks ago and loaded up on some closet essentials! I don’t have much time to shop these days, so I try to stock up when I can.
Relaxation: Ahhhh . . . I love a good massage. The Relâche Spa at the Gaylord Texan is a favorite. In a pinch, I stop in at Relaxation Station at the Hulen Mall (no appointment needed!). For pedicures, I indulge at Hollywood Nails and Spa on Camp Bowie. We love to travel, so we do family vacations when we find time to get away.
