Free Fun in Fort Worth

Finding fun excursions with little ones can add up sometimes – admission fees and food, not to mention memberships and parking – but fun can be free in Fort Worth! Take advantage of the variety of opportunities in our backyard for discovery and exploration that are easy on the budget. While the options are numerous, here’s a list of three favorite year-round ideas and three specifically summer activities you can add to your bucket list.

Year Round Free Fun

1. The library – The library has to be the first on the list for children! Whether it’s your neighborhood, community, church, or public library, the endless shelves of books inside these magical spaces encourage curiosity and creativity for any age. Younger children enjoy organized story times and parents appreciate a break from reading the same book for the fortieth time to their toddler. Reading incentive programs are great for older children, and they can check out movies and music, too. Make going to the library a half-day outing by walking to your neighborhood library (those little libraries in front of businesses and houses are great, too!) or driving to downtown Fort Worth to the central branch.

2. The park – From popular parks like Trinity and Tillery to the beautiful Botanical Gardens or the park closest to your home, being outside allows space for recreation and reconnection. Turn off your phone and be present in play with your kids. Add something interesting when you go: bring a picnic; print out or download a scavenger hunt; invite a friend; take a kite; feed the ducks; go on a nature walk. Consider visiting parks you do not usually frequent and make it a cross-town adventure.

3. The arts – We are fortunate to live in a city with access to world-class art through music, dance, and media. Find time to enjoy live music in Sundance Square while the kids see the fountains. Pretend you’re a tourist and roam around the Stockyards, especially when the Fort Worth Herd makes its twice-daily parade. Try the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth on a Sunday afternoon when admission is free.

Summer Opportunities

1.  Dance – Towards the end of June, Ballet Concerto offers a top-notch ballet program called the Summer Dance Concert in Trinity Park (lawn seats are free!), June 22 – 24. Sit outside under the stars and enjoy professional dancers amaze you with their skill and artistic expression.

2. Family Friendly Live Music –  You can find performers at Central Market, Sundance Square, or Friday on the Green, among others, where families can relax accompanied by great music in an outdoor atmosphere.

3. Movies – Sure, RedBox movies are cheap, but it’s always enjoyable to watch movies on the big screen. Sundance Square offers a movie Wednesday evenings after dark in the summer.

Let’s not overcomplicate having a good time with the kids. Making memories are priceless, and they can be done without breaking the bank. So get creative, get the kids, and get planning your next fun-filled and free adventure!
