Five Summer Beauty Must-Haves

1

We’ve signed up for swim lessons, and we’re dusting off those beach towels. My kiddos’ swimwear and sandals are purchased in their appropriate sizes for summer 2014, and now, I find myself turning my attention to what I need for a summer-time update.

1. Sunscreen for your face
CeraVe  SPF 50 Sunscreen Face Lotion
I’m starting with the most important because if I have a soapbox, this is it. Moms, this is as important as healthy eating, exercising, and staying well-hydrated. We must take care of all of ourselves, including our skin. You never know on a summer day when you might stop at the park on a whim, so plan ahead and make this step part of “putting on your face.” Multiple dermatologists have recommended this line of drugstore skin care to me, and InStyle included it in their best beauty buys for 2014.

2. A fabulous lip color
Splurge: Nars Heat Wave $26; Save: Revlon Super Lustrous Fire and Ice $5
These are orange-red shades that flatter ALL skin tones, amazingly enough! And yes, they are super bright in the tube. Like–whoa mama–bright. Dab it on with your finger or lip brush to soften a bit. They are both gorgeous and an easy update to your makeup bag for summer.

3. An awesome nail color that makes you feel like you’re on vacation
Essie Fiji $8.50
Some ladies like a bright coral, but I prefer this gorgeous opaque pink-white shade.  It’s clean and takes me away to the islands even when I’m next to the kiddie pool.

4. Something lighter weight than foundation
Splurge: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer $42, Clinique CC Cream $35; Save: Ponds BB Cream $9
Skip the normal foundation and go for lighter coverage over the hot summer months.  A bonus is that all three of these contain sunscreen for some extra coverage. Each come in light, medium, and dark shades. I’ve tried them all, and each is a great product.  The Mercier and Ponds are both true to color, but the Clinique goes on a bit lighter than it appears before application.

5. A bronzer
Splurge: MAC Bronzing Powder $25; Save: Rimmel Natural Bronzer $5
To give yourself that beautiful sun glow (all the while protecting your pretty face with that must-have #1, sunscreen), add a bronzer to your beauty regimen. Choose a shade one tone darker than your regular skin tone to keep from making your face look dirty. If you go too dark, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

Here’s to a beautiful summer 2014, Cowtown Moms!

  1. I always have Aloe Vera on hand to soothe skin that has been in the sun a little too much AND I use aloe every time I shave. I used to get horrible bumps/rash, no matter what razor I use or shaving gel/lotion I always get awful bumps UNTIL I started putting aloe on all my shaved parts immediately after I get out of the shower. It is my MUST have for summer!
