Belly Diaries: First Words To My Second Born

I’m not sure why I’m so nervous to become a mother to a girl. I wasn’t nearly as nervous having our son and definitely wasn’t worried about what I would say to him. Maybe that’s because I thought my husband could handle it – man to man? I figured he wouldn’t have half the drama and growing pains I experienced growing up as a girl… not entirely true I know, but girls just seem like more work to me.

I thought about compiling a list of things I want to say to my daughter… do you know how much pressure that puts on a person? Holy smokes, I start to feel contractions when I start to think of exactly what I want to say to her. I want to make sure I inspire, uplift, encourage, etc. The more I thought about it, the sillier it all seemed. Why am I treating her any different from our son Jack?

It became very clear to me that I should say to her what I said to Jack when he was born and continue to say to him as he grows. Of course each message will be tailored to each child specifically but the overall message is the same. It also occurred to me that I have heard and continue to hear these same words from my own parents and they stick with me in everything I do.

So when Isla Leigh Hargrave decides to join us in this world, I will say the following things to her:

I love you so much. From the moment I found out about you, you had my heart. I will always love you no matter what is said or done. Never forget that you are loved and can always find love here with your family. Know that at this moment I am just proud to hold you, proud that you breathe, proud that you eat and have soiled diapers. That pride will only continue to grow as you eat solids, crawl, learn words, play nicely with others, make it through that first day of school – the list goes on. Have confidence and pride in all you do because you will create awesome things big and small. Many good things have happened to me in my life but having you and your brother bring me a joy like no other. I’m sure there will be frustrating times, but that is when it’s most important that you know that you make me happy. You are capable of anything. I want you to know the sky is the limit. You have it in you to be extremely smart, beautiful, caring and loving. Whatever you want to be, you can be. Right now, you are everything to us.

What were some of the first things you said to your newborn?
