As a mom of six, it is hard to imagine anything as challenging or rewarding as motherhood. Being a mom often means long, thankless hours of hard work, laundry, and cleaning up messes, not to mention sacrificing your needs for the needs of others on a daily basis. It also means smiles that warm the heart, laughter, and pride in seeing those you care for thrive and flourish.

But, recently, I learned that being a business owner is not too different from being a mom.

My dream has always been to own my own business. I worked for The Woodhouse Day Spa corporate office in Victoria, Texas, my hometown, as the director of marketing for two years. A good friend of mine, Jeni Garrett, started the franchise. I was able to see the intricate workings of the business and learn about the spa industry. I also learned a great deal from Jeni, a busy mom of two boys who juggles her career, building a national brand, and family. A few years after leaving my position at The Woodhouse, Jeni asked me to assist with a project. Once I began working on the project, I quickly discovered that the franchise was about to take off and that it offered an amazing opportunity for me to fulfill my dream.

I shared my idea with my aunt, Diann Edmondson, and she was thrilled at the prospect. So, we went online and filled out the franchise application. Fast-forward two years and here we are business partners with our husbands and owners of a beautiful spa in a wonderful city. Not only are we owners of the Fort Worth location, we are also regional developers for Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas. We figured go big or go home!

Of course, the past two years have not been without challenges. Just like motherhood, no one can prepare you for what lies ahead when you open a business. You look around at others and think, “I can do that.” “That looks like fun!” You don’t often see the mom, who has been up all night with a sick child, struggling to put one foot in front of the other, or the business owner who has been at the laundry mat all night because the washer and dryer broke and there were 50 loads of laundry! Both motherhood and business ownership are hard. You don’t realize just how hard until there really is no turning back. But, having my aunt, who is my role model and like a second mom to me, by my side has made the hard times a little easier to bear.

The dream for Diann and I goes beyond just owning a business. We also want to make a difference; The Woodhouse allows us to do just that. For us, it is not only a business, but also a ministry. Every aspect of The Woodhouse — from the spa service itself to the products, spa team, atmosphere, and everything in-between, contributes to the overall health and wellbeing of the guest; she can step away from the day-to-day hustle and bustle to focus on her health. What more could a mom ask for? What more could a business owner strive to provide?

Our spa services, which include massage therapy, skin and body treatments, and manicures and pedicures, are developed to ensure that the guest receives results that truly make a difference. It is what we call ”touch with intent.” The Woodhouse guest experience goes beyond beauty to encompass health and wellbeing. Our main skin care line, Voya, is created from hand-harvested seaweed from the Atlantic coast of Ireland. Seaweed can naturally cleanse and purify the skin, helping to improve suppleness and elasticity as well as reduce the signs of ageing by toning, smoothing, moisturizing, and stimulating skin cells. Guests can even take a seaweed bath. View our full menu of services here.

As moms, busy career women, wives, and all the many roles we take on as women, we often put ourselves last on the list. Once guests step through the doors of The Woodhouse and our signature scent fills the senses, they are reminded of their worth and encouraged to focus on themselves. Our hope is that, after time at The Woodhouse, they can return to their lives and loved ones a little bit stronger and ready to take on what’s next — all of which is not too different from what a mom wants for her children.

As Mother’s Day approaches, I am sure you can guess what I would suggest for the perfect gift: a Woodhouse Day Spa Package.

If you dream of owning your own business and would like to know more about The Woodhouse, please call or email me. Opportunities exist in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas. If I can do it, so can you!
