Parenting by the Book

parentingbooksWith so many parenting books, ranging from sleeping tips, feeding advice, breastfeeding how to, and toddler survival, it can be overwhelming to find one that piques your interest, or you can relate to, or doesn’t make you feel like you are doing something wrong! Sometimes it’s just nice to read a book that will bring you comfort and encouragement–for whatever stage your child is experiencing.

Here is a list of some of my favorite insightful and inspirational parenting books:

Bringing Up Bebe by Pamela Druckerman – An insightful look at the difference between American and French parenting. It’s written from an American mother’s perspective of her life in Paris and parenting differences she’s noted.

Sparkling Green Earrings: Catching the Light at Every Turn by Melanie Shankle – This heartwarming and quirky memoir makes you feel like you are not the only one being swallowed up by parenthood. A funny and sarcastic, yet honest look at motherhood and life in general. You can read our full review of this book here.

The 5 Love Languages of Children by Gary Chapman – An insightful book on finding which of the five love languages (physical touch, words of affirmation, giving gifts, acts of services, and quality time) that your child expresses. It then gives examples on how to communicate with your child based on his or her love language.

Surprised by Motherhood: Everything I Never Expected About Being a Mom by Lisa-Jo Baker – An exhilarating memoir of a woman never wanting children who discovers the joy and true love that motherhood brings. This story of loss, love, awkward teenage years, birth of your firstborn, and how your heart changes with each child is one to which all mothers can relate.

Loving the Little Years: Motherhood in the Trenches by Rachel Jankovic – An encouraging read for those moms who are stressed out, sleep deprived, and who just need some clarity and perspective in their lives.

The Bible – So much wisdom in one book! Proverbs outlines positive principles for parenting and is a great place to start.

  1. Not going to lie, I was totally prepared for another post on the top 10 instructional guides for parents, so this list was a pleasant surprise! So many great choices, I had no idea Chapman had written a love language book on children! Thank you for this awesome list, now to find time to read them 🙂
